Severe Weather Preparedness

March is SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS month and we have put together information to help you and your family prepare for any kind of weather!

  1.  Identify the severe weather hazards in your area.  In the Ozarks, we face the threat of severe thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.
  2. Set up your plan. Who is responsible for the plan?  Someone needs to be in charge. How will you receive weather warnings? NOAA weather radios are a great option, but you should have multiple ways to receive critical weather information. How will you inform people to activate plan? Establish shelter areas for various situations.
  3.  Practice your plan. Conduct drills and evaluate strength and weaknesses of your plan.  Think through possible changes.
  4. Have a family disaster plan.  Decide where to meet and how to contact each other.  Put together an emergency supply kit: bottled water, radio w/batteries, flashlight, prescription medicine and first aid supplies.  Purchase a generator.  Know all exits and where to meet outside.  Know how to shut off your water, gas and electricity.  Keep a small amount of cash on hand.  Keep gas tanks full.
